The U.S. Air Force has made an agreement with EADS, the European aircraft manufacturer, which has been vying against Chicago-based Boeing for the large military contract.
EADS is the winner of a US$40 billion military aircraft contract to supply refuelling aircraft to the airforce.
EADS will supply the USAF with a modified A330 with a larger capacity than the Boeing 767-200 plane which was on offer.

Simple in Hindsight1) Flying on an A318/319/320 is not pleasant. The climate control is as reliable as the cooling and electrical systems were on my '77 Scirocco (but, unlike the planes, I liked that car). I’ll take a 737 flight anyday. Not just my opinion! However, both platforms take off and land. Also, you can’t blame the U.S. airlines for buying a foreign government subsidized plane. Ironically, that’s capitalism.
2) The USAF picked the plane that best fits its needs. The 767 is too small, the 777 too big. Boeing does not have a platform the size of the 330, and did not choose to build one.
3) In light of item 2, the lease scandal a few years ago makes more sense now (OK, that’s assumption on top of assumption): get the 767 tanker into service as quickly as possible before the objective comparison to the A330, based predominantly on size, is made.
4) The USAF cannot care about how the A330 development was developed; french socialism, government subsidies, make-work programs, nor the rudeness of Parisiens (been there!). Nor can the USAF care about sending $BB abroad, sacrifing American jobs, and providing subsidies and cash flow to Boeing’s only commercial rival. Congress may care, however, which will only drag out the drama.
5) Boeing needs to figure out how to win major military contract. Here’s an idea: offer the right product, or one that fits the bill of what the military really wanted. That was the case with the 737 over the Orion update for the Navy. Not the case with the JSF flying toad and the 767 tanker. Here’s what not to do: rely on “leaders” like Mike Sears. |

They withdrew their proposal just in time.
This strategic move will leave EADS with the developement of A350, A380, A400M, the installation of an assembly line in Mobile for the KC-30 and for A330F and the installation of A320 assembly line in China. |

40 Years and Counting ...That’s how long ago Boeing produced the last tanker. Several other countries have already figured this out and purchased the EADS tanker versus the Boeing tanker. Let’s hope America keeps its eyes open long enough to see the technical advantages of the EADS tanker and not the Boeing propaganda it spews to win contracts. |

it's what is best for those in uniform that countslet me tell you something: as a patriot in these days I don’t care who builds something and how many jobs are created. We are at war and probably will be facing new conflicts that cause American men and women to fight for our liberty and rights. The only thing that should be of any concern for us is that our military has the best possible equipment at hand. If the Airbus is the better aircraft, than so be it. I don’t give a sh** that Boeing claims to create more jobs. It’s not a handful of jobs at stake, it’s the superiority of our fighting forces and we should not ask the Airforce to fight for us with inferior equipment. Looking at the jobs alone is an untruthful patrotism! |

Foriegn CompanyI think what most media outlets fail to fail to mention is that if the contract is won by EADS the planes will be made here in the US - Mobile, Alabama (which could really use the economic boom that the project would bring to it’s region. Also, Boeing the “US company” - like many American companies gets many of the parts for their planes from foreign countries. EADS “the foreign company” is currently a contractor for many US Defence projects. Its US headquarters just so happens to be a stone’s through from the Pentagon and keeps many Americans gainfully employed through its many US subsidiaries. |

not trueEads is not a better design! bigger means heavier, which means higher fuel cost, which means limited airfields it can land on across the world. 767 tanker has been in production for foreign countries, which means lower cost to build (plants are already build in Everett and Wichita). Eads will have cost overruns as well as performance shortfalls. Not to mention the US dollar falling to the Euro |

Malaysia Sun IncorrectWASHINGTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. Air Force’s top weapons buyer said on Wednesday her best bet was that the winner of a potential $40 billion refueling aircraft contract would be announced after U.S. markets close on Friday.
“That’s my best bet for now," Sue Payton, assistant secretary for acquisition, told Reuters after a hearing of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee on the Air Force 2009 budget request.
Boeing Co (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is vying for the contract against a team made up of Northrop Grumman Corp (NOC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Europe’s EADS (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research).
“It’s absolutely not going to happen today," Payton said. “We’re really making sure all the 'i’s' are dotted and 't’s' are crossed."
Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne earlier told Reuters he hoped an award would be announced “any day now," once the Pentagon’s top weapons buyer, John Young, has signed off on he plan to buy 179 tankers, used to extend warplanes' operating range.
“You don’t have a decision until all the paperwork is done and complete," Wynne said during a break in testimony to the House panel.
The Air Force presented its acquisition plan on Monday to a top-level panel chaired by Young, the deputy undersecretary for acquisitions. (Reporting by Jim Wolf, editing by Mark Porter)

No wayIn light of an economic downturn, I’d prefer NOT to send any American taxpayer money overseas to any European-owned consortium. AND using taxpayer money to build new facilities when Boeing already has thousands of trained workers AND established facilities is wasteful. AND conveniently finding an American partner in Northrup Grumman (while I’m sure they are lovely people) is insulting. Let’s be reasonable, Boeing is the better choice and I hope the Air Force realizes it. |

Pulled Their Proposal????? Are you nuts???Seven-Oops, first of all, no one pulls a proposal at the last minute - they “submit” them at the last minute. Second, why would any company 'pull' its proposal for a gadzillion dollar program at the last minute??? Ludicrous. |

JOBSKeep the jobs in America No “Smoke and Mirrors” EADS will only be using 450 US workers to built this POS airplane Anyone who works on an Aribus knows they are a throw away airplane. Look at the KC 135.. She has been a faithful servant of many thursty American fighters, and Cargo aircraft for over 40 years. Trial by fire test “PASSED” the KC 767 is flying and is currently being delivered to foregin countries. The EADS POS is still years away from going into service when built in the US.
I’ll gladly pay a little more in taxes to keep Americas aerospace industry strong. Remember to VOTE any U.S. Congressman/Woman or Senator OUT if they don’t support the American Workers! -RED-WHITE-&-BLUE-BLOGGER |

KC-30 is just as American as the Boeing offeringAmerican Way- I beg to differ. The A330 will be militarized and modified COMPLETELY in America (in Mobile, AL)to transform it into the KC-30 and provide jobs for hundreds of subcontractors. Northrop Grumman workers from many states will lead the effort. The KC-30 is just as RED, WHITE and BLUE as the Boeing 767 offering! |

KC-30 is the best oneThe KC-30 is currently the best aircraft for refueling operations and it’s the best choice if the USAF really wants to have available the best technology.
This is as clear as the RAAF, RAF, UAE and Saudi Arabian have selected the KC-30 instead of the KC-767. |

GO BOEINGNorthrop Grumman is ony a pawn in this game and are only doing it to make an extra buck. They will have tint tiny to do with eads after contract signing. Jobs and tax dollard need STAY in this country. The Fench don’t like us, only our money.$man doesn’t know what he is talking about. The US effort will be only 1500 jobs vs tens of thousands if Boeing prevails. |

JobsIf anyone really beleives that EADS would create a significant number of jobs in the USA to “modify” this aircraft, then I have some swamp land in Florida for sale. Get serious ... EADS / Airbus is a “Jobs Program” for Europe and awarding any US Contract to them will only result in European jobs. |

KC-30 vs. KC-767The KC-30 is a much larger aircraft, almost the same size as the KC-10. The KC-767 is just slightly larger than the KC-135 this KC-X bid is supposed to replace.
There will be a follow-on KC-Y tanker competition in a couple of years to replace KC-10s, and the KC-30 will be a strong contender against the KC-777.
The KC-30 will not be built in Mobile, Al. It will be built by EADS as a basic airframe, then flown to Mobile where it will be outfitted with refueling equipment. Also, EADS has said that it will also move it’s A-330F final assembly to Mobile if it gets the tanker bid.
I’d say there is a 50-50 chance that the order will be split between both Boeing and EADS. |

Boeing all the wayI will vote against politician who votes or supports giving the tanker contract to airbus. The French government owns 10% of EAD-Airbus. The US taxpayer should not be paying money to the French government. This is the government that would not allow our planes to overfly there territory when we bombed Libya in the mid-eighties and they call themselves are allies. |

What are you smoking? You said it yourself the airplane will be modified in the USA NOT BUILT....Boeing builds the KC-767in the USA; It’s not built in a foregin country and flown here to be “Modified” It is a RED-WHITE-&-BLUE BUILT ON AMERICAN PRIDE AIRPLANE! It won’t have drawings that require a degree in French to read, It won’t Maintenance Manuals Written first in French. The KC-767 is a Native Born American! Born in America and proud to serve those who protect our way of life.

Which One to Buy?A man walks into a Toyota dealership and 2 salesmen rush to help him. He says, “I want to buy a 4Runner." One salesman quickly points to a nearby 4Runner and says, “Let me show you this vehicle." The other salesman points to a Sequoia and says, “Let me show you this vehicle." The man says, “I’m looking for a 4Runner not a Sequoia." The second salesman says, “But the Sequoia is the right vehicle for you." Quess which salesman got the sale? |

Tanker TalkGreat job Malayasia sun for this scoop!USAF must have been convinced that NG/EADS offering is more modern and suited for its role. Especially after getting orders from Australian, UK, UAE and Saudi Air Forces. And then its the Southern states AL, MS, LA and FL that desparately needs jobs and stimulate a sluggish economy. What would the point in giving all these jobs to Seattle and Wichita. It would only drive up the cost of living there. They dont really need these jobs! |

TOO MANY SHITHEADS ABOVE WHO DONT KNOW WHAT THEIR TALKIN ABOUTLets put away the false pride and look at reality. The KC-30 is superior in every way. Boeings claims are exadurated, especially those on employment. They are falling over themselves turning this into a mass employment campaign because their plane is inferior and they know it. |

One of the stupidest things ive ever heard. What the f+++ do you think a civilian airbus has in its wings when it flys? Water? A plane does not have to be a tanker to contain fuel. |

to grumpy and RED-WHITE-&-BLUE-BLOGGERThe KC-30 will be BUILT in Mobile, Alabama at Brookley Field/Mobile Downtown Airport, as will A330 cargo planes. It will then go to a co-located Northrop Grumman facility to be MODIFIED. BUILDING AND MODIFICATION WILL BOTH HAPPEN IN MOBILE, ALABAMA. |

Greenbow, ALABAMA!This is good news cuz Lt. Dan said I might be buildin' planes soon an' I can give up my job cuttin' grass for free. Seems that everything I do turns to gold so if this plant starts up in Alabama, it will be a success fer sure. Then again, I am a fictional character so Boeing should probably win.
