The five major newspapers in Denmark have reprinted the controversial cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban.
The newspapers decided to re-publish the cartoon in response to the arrest on Tuesday of three people who allegedly were planning to kill the artist who drew the cartoon, Kurt Westergaard.
The suspects are a Moroccan born Dane and two Tunisians.
Angry demonstrations occurred in many Islamic countries when the cartoons were first published two years ago.
The demonstrations led to some 150 people being killed.

Well, Smartypants (a/k/a "Anonymous") ...... I actually HAVE tried to learn about Islamic history and the draw of Muhammad’s teachings. I’m not entirely sure that the two references that you provide in your post would really be considered an informative investigation into history. Have you had an opportunity to read W. Montgomery Watt’s 2-volume history - “Muhammad at Mecca” and “Muhammad at Medina”? I might steer away from Karen Armstrong’s works as they apologize for some painful facts by referring to Christianity’s own such acts (e.g., the Crusades, the Salem witch trials, etc., etc.) rather than trying to look at them squarely and fully discuss their history and implications, but the Watt writings are very well researched and interesting. No doubt there are others as well.
When dealing with a belief system followed by millions of fellow souls, I’m always in favor of dialogue and mercy - I’m not much for “Down with the infidels” or “Muhammad was not a very nice guy."
Muhammad spoke to the hearts and needs of people, and still does today. To the extent that makes them violent towards others, we need to understand why that is. To the extent it makes them kind and merciful towards others, we need to encourage that.
Anonymous, there is nowhere on planet earth whre the human condition is black and white - only gray - and, sometimes, alas, bloody.

Good ShowI’m very glad that Denmark is real enough to stand with the truth. Not to say that the cartoon is necessarily true, although I see it as true. Rather to say that with the increase of illegal and violent pressure as well as legal force, any slightly negative comments made towards muslims are often stifled. Sometimes these comments may be true, sometimes they may be false or exaggerated, but within boundaries we should have the same right to express our views on situations surrounding muslims as they do and have expressed in their countries regarding the rest of the world. |
