Academic highlights Indigenous health failings

A health academic says the Western Australian Government has done nothing to address Aboriginal health issues since the Reid Report was released two years ago.

Professor Gavin Mooney says a key recommendation of the report was that a primary care strategy be developed through consultation with Aboriginal communities.

He says since then all the Health Department has done is speak to a few Aboriginal medical services while ignoring the views of communities around the state.

Professor Mooney has called on the Government to make the health of Aborigines a priority and address the department's failures.

"Given the state of Aboriginal health, which I think is recognised by most people as being really very poor indeed, then the fact that the Government has not acted on that recommendation two years on is really rather disgraceful," he said.
