Nine U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, toll for April rises to 99
    Malaysia Sun
    Saturday 28th April, 2007

The U.S. Defense Department has confirmed the deaths of nine American soldiers in Iraq.

Three servicemembers lost their lives Saturday when their patrol was hit by a roadside bombing southeast of Baghdad.

Five U.S. soldiers were killed Friday in combat in Al Anbar province, while another soldier died in another roadside bombing south of Baghdad.

The latest deaths took the number of U.S. servicemembers killed in Iraq in April to 99.

Elsewhere, a car bomb near a Shi'ite shrine in the holy city Karbala killed at least 58 people. According to The Associated Press it was the deadliest attack in Iraq since April 18, when 127 people were killed in a car bombing near the Sadriyah market in Baghdad, one of four bombings that killed a total of 183 people in the bloodiest day since a U.S.-Iraq security operation began in the capital more than 10 weeks ago.

In all, at least 119 people were killed or found dead Saturday, including the bodies of 38 people killed execution-style — apparent victims of the so-called sectarian death squads mostly run by Shiite militias.
