DELHI: The Bofors ghost was finally buried on Thursday when the Supreme Court
discharged the Hindujas of all liability in the politically sensitive case.
This comes seven months after
the government's consent led to the unfreezing of controversial Italian
businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi's London bank accounts, where the kickback money
was allegedly deposited.
In
January, the law ministry consented to unfreezing Quattrocchi's account,
allowing him to withdraw Rs 21 crore of alleged Bofors kickback money from a
British bank. The money was withdrawn within
days.
On Thursday, the CBI was
silent when the Supreme Court allowed the Hinduja brothers to withdraw Rs 15
crore, deposited as security for allowing them to go abroad.
