Ban on purchase of cars is no solution

THE proposal of Arif Al Muhiri, who suggested a two-year ban on the registration of private cars in Dubai as a possible solution to the ever-worsening traffic situation, is impractical and does not take into account the different dimensions of the problem. It will be difficult to impose a blanket ban on buying cars for any period of time.10 February 2006
The problem of traffic jams in the city is, by and large, limited to the peak hours in the morning and evening, during which time people commute to their work places and back home. One solution is to insist that establishments employing large number of people should arrange buses to transport their employees, so that the number of cars on the roads during peak hours is drastically reduced.
We agree with Al Muhiri that more police patrols on the roads during peak hours will definitely help bring about some sanity into the roads. It will also help reduce accidents.
