Bahamian soccer player gets a shot at the pros
He recently returned to Nassau after helping the men's senior national soccer team advance to the second round of the Digicel/CONCACAF Caribbean Zone Gold Cup Qualifier. Today, Swaby will head to Denver, Colorado, where he will try out for Major League Soccer (MLS) team, the Colorado Rapids. In a recent interview with the press, Swaby spoke about his bid for the pros and about his recent experience in Cuba, where the Gold Cup Qualifier was held. "My parents live in Denver, so I was heading back there anyway," said Swaby, explaining how he got a shot at the try-outs. "Through connections I got the try-out set up. It was pretty much in the process before I go anywhere else for try-outs. "If it all goes well, there probably won't be a need to try out somewhere else I hope. This will be the first of (hopefully) many try-outs. So if I don't make the team, it'll be a good starting experience." If he isn't picked up by the Rapids after the try-out, Swaby says that he'll test his luck in Europe. While there are no teams in particular expressing interest from the European side, Swaby said that his connections over there may have some good news for him soon. "There's a connection in England that's working out the details and logistics right now, but I think before next month I should know everything for sure," said Swaby. While playing in the Gold Cup Qualifier, Swaby provided his team with energy and intensity on defence. He says the experience in Cuba was one that he would never forget. "It was awesome," said Swaby. "I felt great from the first day when we had practice at the stadium in Cuba, it was an amazing facility." For him and the rest of the team, it was probably their first time playing in front of such a huge crowd. Swaby said that from the moment they arrived in Cuba, he and the rest of the team knew that they were going to shine. "Being in that kind of atmosphere made it feel like it was something real that we were doing and that we had the opportunity to do something special," said Swaby. "It's amazing to be able to finally bring home some wins for The Bahamas from a soccer standpoint. We worked extremely hard for the past three months to try and bring back numerous victories and we accomplished that. "So, I'm extremely ecstatic and happy."
