KNOXVILLE (WATE)-- The Public Building Authority (PBA) tells 6 News Tuesday that keeping the City County parking garage closed to public traffic is still a good idea.
County commissioners on Monday delayed a vote on reopening the garage in downtown Knoxville until their February meeting.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms says there are several areas vulnerable to an explosive attack. The ATF recommended to the PBA several ways to improve security at the garage.
Beyond keeping the garage closed to the public, the ATF's report also suggests how to strengthen security already in place.
The report recommends a stronger barrier and metal gates at both the entrance and exit to the garage. Also, the ATF says stricter screening for all vehicles is a must.
While the PBA's CEO Dale Smith won't comment on future security changes, he says keeping the garage closed to public traffic is still a good idea to keep the building and its occupants safe.
"Our focus is on the building as a whole and on explosives that could damage all or most of the building," Smith adds.
County Mayor Mike Ragsdale is leaning to the same conclusion. "When a multiple group of law enforcement agencies tell you that it wouldn't be a wise idea for citizens, I think you've got to pay attention to that."
City Council has already voted to reopen the parking garage.
The PBA, which owns the garage, ultimately makes the decision on whether to reopening it.
