Ian Blackwell took four wickets as England gained a first-innings lead at the Brabourne Stadium. Somerset left-arm spinner Blackwell finished with figures of four for 57 as the Cricket Club of India side were dismissed for 251. England were 30 for one in their second innings by stumps to lead by 78 runs. Brought into the attack midway through the second day, Blackwell - on the tour as a replacement for the crocked Ashley Giles - wasted little time in halting a half-century stand for the fifth wicket. And he added three more as Michael Vaughan's side patiently worked their way through the tail. Despite the oppressive heat, England's fielding was smart with two run-outs in one over providing the initial inroads. Kevin Pietersen swooped in from cover with an under-arm throw to leave Sahil Kukreja short of his ground in going for a quick single. Two balls later, when opener Robin Uthappa hit Simon Jones to mid-on and called for a run, captain Vaughan produced another direct hit to remove Vinit Indulkar. Steve Harmison then produced a delivery which bounced and left Uthappa to earn a caught behind as three wickets went down for two runs. But there was sufficient pain for Amol Muzumdar, struck on the glove by an Andrew Flintoff short ball, to retire hurt at lunch. Left-hander Hrishikesh Shinde joined him in the dressing room soon after the interval when a flash at a delivery angled across him proved to be Matthew Hoggard's first success on tour. The other uncapped slow left-armer in the party, Monty Panesar, began with a maiden but took 17 overs to make a breakthrough. It arrived when youngster Aniket Redkar missed a sweep and was bowled round his legs. England were then left to negotiate eight overs, after Blackwell completed his quartet with another miscued drive, during which Andrew Strauss flicked a full delivery straight to square leg.
