Strong winds add to Whyalla's dust woesWhyalla's dust problem was compounded by the strong winds yesterday. The South Australian steel city recorded a particle matter reading of 240 - the Environment Protection Authority says any reading above 100 is unhealthy. OneSteel says the dust was coming from everywhere but the chair of the Red Dust Action Group, Ted Kittle, says much of it was coming from the direction of the steelworks. "The north wind was whipping the wind off of the Steelworks site and it was just horrific and we've taken a photo of the background site of the scrub and you didn't have to be too smart to know where the dust was coming from today." The PM-10 particle reading in Port Pirie was also at the "very poor" level of 155. |
